Sukkot is when the Jews build a sukkah in a backyard, patio, or balcony to act as a temporary home for the holiday. The flimsy hut represents the fragile dwellings the Israelites lived in after escaping slavery in Egypt, and its temporary nature reminds people to appreciate their more permanent homes.
